Palo Alto, CA -- Police arrested a suspect over the weekend who had been wanted in conjunction with a violent battery and indecent exposure case that occurred back in January on a levee at the Palo Alto Baylands Open Space Preserve.

On January 21, 2015, at about 2:51 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call of a battery that had just occurred at the Palo Alto Baylands Open Space Preserve in the 2500 block of Embarcadero Road.  The suspect had fled on foot.  The investigation revealed that the victims, a man in his twenties and an adult woman in her teens who had been walking together on a levee near the nature interpretive center, had sat down on a bench next to the suspect to take a break.  After some brief conversation, the suspect then began to "pat down" the male victim as if searching for a weapon.  The victims immediately stood up and began to walk away.

When they were about 40 feet away, the suspect yelled out to them.  The female victim looked back and saw the suspect exposing his penis at her.  When her boyfriend produced his phone to call 9-1-1, the suspect approached and punched him repeatedly in the face and upper body.  The victim fought back in an effort to defend himself.  The victim reported losing consciousness momentarily, but he quickly came to and was able to get away from the suspect.  The male victim sustained minor injuries to his face and bruising to one of his hands.  Personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department transported him to a local hospital.  The female victim did not participate in the fight and was not injured.  To read the original news release about the crime, click here.

Detectives worked with the victims and were eventually able to identify the suspect as 26-year-old Aaron Dennis Womack of East Palo Alto.  Detectives presented the case to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office for review, and obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect on July 8 charging him with one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon (with the weapon being the suspect’s fists, as the male victim had lost consciousness) and one misdemeanor count of indecent exposure.  On Sunday, July 19, at about 10:20 p.m., officers located the suspect in City Parking Garage “S” at 445 Bryant Street and arrested him without incident pursuant to the warrant.  The suspect’s booking photo is attached to this release.
