Resident Interrupts Home Burglary Attempt
Contact : Sean Downey, Officer, Police Department    650-329-2413
Palo Alto, CA -- A burglar posing as a construction worker looking for work opened a sliding glass door of a back yard guest house yesterday morning, but was scared away by a resident inside.

On Monday, May 18, 2015, at about 9:30 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call reporting a prowler who had been in the back yard of a home in the 3200 block of Maddux Drive approximately 45 minutes earlier.  Officers responded to the area, but did not locate the suspect.

The investigation revealed that the victim, a woman in her forties, had been asleep inside a guest house located in the back yard of another residence.  A male suspect opened an unlocked sliding glass door and put his head inside.  The victim asked who was there, and the suspect replied that he was a concrete worker looking for employment.  The victim yelled, and the man walked away.  The suspect had gained entry to the back yard via an unlocked side yard gate.  The victim last saw him walking out of the same gate back towards the street.

The victim described the suspect as a Pacific Islander male, approximately 55 to 65 years of age, who was clean-shaven with medium-length gray hair.  The victim was not able to see his clothing, height or build.

There were no other reported residential burglaries in the neighborhood yesterday morning.  There had been a couple of reported overnight thefts from unlocked automobiles in the neighborhood last week, but detectives do not believe this case is related.

Police ask that you promptly report suspicious activity to 9-1-1.  We encourage you to always close and lock doors and windows, and to lock side yard gates.  If meter readers need to access your utility meter behind a locked gate, you can call Palo Alto Utilities Customer Service at 650-329-2161 to discuss options.  For a full list of crime prevention tips, please visit
