Police Seek Suspect in Sexual Battery of 12-Year-Old Girl
Contact : Brian Philip, Detective Sergeant, Police Department    650-329-2413
Palo Alto, CA -- Police are seeking the public's assistance with identifying a suspect who grabbed the buttocks of a 12-year-old girl while at a food market at Stanford Shopping Center.

On Sunday, April 26, 2015, at about 3:45 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a phone call from the mother of the victim, a 12-year-old girl, reporting a sexual battery that had occurred at about 2:10 p.m. at Sigona’s Farmers Market at the Stanford Shopping Center, located at 180 El Camino Real.  Officers responded to the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.

The investigation revealed that the mother and daughter were inside the market shopping.  The suspect walked up next to them and, from a review of surveillance images, appears to brush against the victim’s buttocks twice with the back of his hand while reaching for some items on the shelf nearby.  A short time later, the victim walked to a different aisle away from her mother.  The suspect followed her, then walked behind her and squeezed her buttocks over the clothing with one hand.  The victim immediately went to her mother and told her what had occurred.  They went looking for the man but could not find him, and went home.  They later notified the police.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying this suspect, and hope that the attached surveillance image of him will help.  The suspect appears to be a white male in his forties, about 6 feet 2 inches tall with a build the victim described as "heavy."  He was wearing a long-sleeved maroon buttoned shirt with a slight plaid design (which is not discernible in the photo due to the angle), dark shorts with cargo pockets on the sides, and dark sneakers.

Detectives are actively working the case.  There have been no similar incidents recently in Palo Alto.  We recommend that anyone who witnesses a sexual battery, or is the victim of a sexual battery, to immediately contact police without delay.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call our 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413.  Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voice mail to 650-383-8984.  Tips can also be submitted anonymously through our free mobile app, downloadable at bit.ly/PAPD-AppStore or bit.ly/PAPD-GooglePlay.
