Palo Alto, CA—Beginning next week, contractors working on the California Avenue streetscape project will apply a concrete patching material to select portions of the sidewalk embedded with glass to address the inconsistencies and unevenness of some of the concrete panels.

The City has been working with Redgwick Construction and its subcontractors on a solution to address concerns regarding some portions of the decorative glass being used as part of the streetscape renovation.  The glass is designed for sidewalk use and is tumbled and polished.  There are some areas where the glass is not fully embedded in the concrete, and the concrete patching solution will be spread over those areas to even out the gaps and provide a more consistent surface.  Once dried, the glass will be securely fixed within the concrete.

The application has been tested and passed a slip test inspection, and is an approved material used by Caltrans and others for similar purposes.  It is estimated that about one-third of the glass embedded sidewalks will need to be treated with the application. It is expected that the work will be completed within the overall construction schedule with the streetscape project targeted to be finished by the end of March.

As part of its ongoing outreach to California Avenue merchants during the streetscape project, the City has been meeting with the local business community to brief them on the proposed solution and timeline.
