Palo Alto, CA -- Police are investigating a sexual assault that occurred in May in a vehicle after a woman in downtown Palo Alto got into a car with an unknown male during the early morning hours.  The suspect is at large.

On the morning of May 30, 2014, at about 9:03 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call reporting a suspicious circumstance and possible sexual assault that had occurred during the early morning hours that day by an unknown suspect at an unknown location.

The victim, a woman in her thirties, reported to police that she had been walking in downtown Palo Alto at about 2:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Hamilton Avenue.  An unknown suspect pulled up to her in a vehicle and offered to give her a ride.  She got into the car and they left eastbound on Hamilton Avenue.

At some point during the next twenty minutes, while the car remained in motion, the suspect sexually assaulted the victim in the vehicle.  The victim was able to open the car door, at which point the suspect slowed the car and pushed her out.  The victim went to a nearby home in the 100 block of Pope Street in Menlo Park, and a resident called police on her behalf just before 3:00 a.m.  Palo Alto officers later took the victim to a local hospital, where she was treated and released.  The victim sustained minor physical injuries.

The victim described the suspect as a 30-year-old unknown race male with short black hair.  He was unshaven and had an unkempt goatee.  The victim described the vehicle as a dark-colored sedan with a dark interior.

Detectives have been conducting follow-up on this case since the time of occurrence in the hopes of releasing as much usable suspect information to the public as possible.  At this point, no sketch of the suspect is available.  There have been no similar cases in Palo Alto or surrounding communities of which we are aware.
