Palo Alto, CA—The City of Palo Alto Office of the City Auditor has been awarded the 2013 Silver Knighton Award in the small audit shop category by the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA). The Knighton Award recognizes the best performance audit reports each year. The City will be formally presented with the award at ALGA's annual conference in Tampa, FL, on May 5, 2014.

The award recognizes the City’s Inventory Management Audit report that determined if City controls were adequate to ensure inventory records were accurate and complete, accountability for inventory transactions, and that inventory was safeguarded. The audit found that management policies and procedures, and physical security could be improved for the City’s inventory. City auditors also found inventory records were inaccurate; improved accountability for transactions was needed; and warehouses contained significant quantities of unused or infrequently used inventory.

"We are honored to receive this recognition for our Inventory Management Audit report. The Office of the City Auditor works diligently to promote an honest, efficient, effective, and fully accountable City government," said Acting City Auditor Houman Boussina. “This award reaffirms our focus on transparency and accountability, and our office looks forward to continuing to produce high-quality audits that will improve City operations.”

Each year, local government audit organizations from around the U.S. and Canada submit their best performance audit reports to be considered for the award. The report the City submitted was judged on several key elements, including the potential for significant impact, the persuasiveness of the conclusions, the focus on improving government efficiency and effectiveness, and its clarity, conciseness and innovation. Winners are chosen by a group of judges from peer organizations.

The Association of Local Government Auditors is a national audit association founded in 1985 and committed to supporting and improving local government auditing through advocacy, collaboration, education, and training, while upholding and promoting the highest standards of professional ethics.

The City of Palo Alto Office of the City Auditor conducts performance audits and reviews of City departments, programs, and services. Performance audits provide the City Council, City management, and the public with independent and objective information regarding the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of City programs and activities.
