Palo Alto, CA -- Police arrested a suspect for residential burglary last night after he entered an occupied structure in the backyard of a residence.

On Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at about 10:31 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a 9-1-1 call from a resident in the 400 block of Margarita Avenue, who reported there was a prowler in their backyard who had momentarily entered an occupied converted pool house.  Prior to the arrival of police, two of the homeowners contacted the suspect in their backyard.  They noted he appeared to be intoxicated.  When police arrived, they detained the suspect without incident.

The investigation revealed that a couple in their twenties had been in the converted pool house when they heard an exterior door leading to the bathroom open.  They called out to see who was there, and heard a muffled reply before they heard the door close again.  One of the residents went to the main house and called 9-1-1.  Two residents who live in the main house, a couple in their fifties, then saw the suspect in their backyard and contacted him.  He was cooperative and waited with them while police responded.  Officers believe the suspect entered the back yard via an unlocked side yard gate and then entered the converted pool house before discovering it was occupied.

Police booked 18-year-old Kevin Raul Valencia of Palo Alto into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for one count of residential burglary, a felony.  A booking photo of the suspect is attached to this release.

Detectives are investigating to see if Valencia may be connected to any other residential burglaries or prowling incidents in Palo Alto or surrounding communities.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call our 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413.  Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voice mail to 650-383-8984.
