Palo Alto, CA -- Police arrested a man last night in downtown Palo Alto after he approached a woman sitting in her parked car and masturbated in front of her.

On Saturday, March 1, 2014, at about 9:59 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a 9-1-1 call from a woman reporting an in-progress indecent exposure that was occurring in City Parking Lot "C" at 491 Ramona Street.  Officers arrived within three minutes and detained a man matching the suspect's description at the scene.

The investigation revealed that the victim, a woman in her twenties, had been sitting in her parked car on the east end of the lot, facing into Cogswell Plaza.  She had initially noticed the suspect sitting on a bench in the plaza, but after a few minutes, saw that he was now standing about five feet away from her passenger side window.  She saw that his pants were around his ankles, and that he was masturbating while looking at her.  The suspect never spoke to her.  She immediately called 9-1-1 from her cell phone, remained inside her vehicle, and stayed on the line until officers arrived on scene and detained the suspect.  By the time officers arrived, the suspect had pulled up his pants.  The victim placed the suspect under private person’s arrest for indecent exposure.

Police booked 48-year-old Eric Alexander Edwards of San Leandro into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for one count of misdemeanor indecent exposure.  A booking photo of the suspect is attached to this release.

Detectives are investigating to see if the suspect may be tied to any other indecent exposure incidents in surrounding communities.  Detectives do not believe that this suspect is involved in the indecent exposure incident that occurred nearby on January 11, 2014, and there have been no other similar crimes in Palo Alto of which we are aware.

Anyone with information about this suspect or this incident is asked to call our 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413.  Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voice mail to 650-383-8984.
