Things You Need To Know If You’re A Business In Downtown Palo Alto

Are you a business downtown?

If so, here’s three things you need to know:

1. Business Registry

All businesses within the City of Palo Alto located in fixed places of business (i.e., commercial buildings, retail storefronts, etc.) are required to register with the City by March 31 of each year. Businesses can register online at Biz License Online and pay a flat fee of $54*. If you are starting a new business, contact MuniServices, LLC (aka Avenu Insights & Analytics) at (866) 240-3665 or bizlicensesupport@muniservices.com. If you registered in previous years, you should receive an invoice from MuniServices, LLC.  MuniServices, LLC administers the Business Registry program on behalf of the City.  For more information about filing an application and payment options, please vist our Business Registry page.

A complete listing of businesses who registered is available on our Dashboard.

* This fee includes a $4 state mandated fee on any application for local business license or similar instrument or permit or renewal thereof. The purpose is to increase disability access and compliance with construction-related accessibility requirements and to develop educational resources for businesses in order to facilitate compliance with federal and state disability laws, as specified.

2. Residential Parking Permits

On September 15, 2015, the City’s new Residential Parking Program took effect throughout the greater downtown area. Businesses that are registered with the City (see #1) can purchase permits to park within the district boundaries. More information is available on our Parking page.

3. Business Improvement District

If your business is located within the boundaries of the Business Improvement District, it is subject to a mandatory special assessment, which partially funds the activities of the Palo Alto Downtown Business & Professional Association. You should receive an invoice from Muni Services LLC, which administers the assessment on behalf of the City. More information is available on our BIDA page.
