The City is allowing businesses to use public parking spaces to create parklets and up to 50% of private parking lots to create more outdoor space. Outdoor dining and retail continue to be supported, and now outdoor gyms and personal services are allowed to operate in these alternate spaces as well. Businesses need to apply for a free encroachment permit or submit an application.
On October 24, 2022, the Palo Alto City Council directed a change to the temporary parklet program to require neighbor consent beginning on January 1, 2023. In response, the temporary parklet guidelines have been revised to reflect the requested changes, which will also be incorporated into the permanent parklet program standards pending final approval.
