Police Arrest Man on Roof for Attempted Residential Burglary

Published on August 31, 2022

Palo Alto, CA A prompt call from residents who heard banging on their roof early yesterday morning led police to arrest a man for attempted residential burglary.

On Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at about 6:08 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call from the residents of a home in the 3600 block of Bryant Street reporting suspicious circumstances.  The residents (a male in his sixties and a woman in her fifties) initially said they could hear someone walking on their roof, and then said they believed the person was trying to break in.

Officers arrived on scene within three minutes and saw the suspect standing on the home’s roof.  Police detained him without incident.  The investigation revealed the suspect had been using a wooden block to strike a skylight on the roof of the home.  The skylight had not broken, and the suspect was not able to gain entry to the home.

Police booked the suspect, 30-year-old Shaquille Hope Armstrong, into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for attempted residential burglary (a felony) and prowling (a misdemeanor, for prowling on the personal property of another without lawful business).  Armstrong has no permanent residence address.  His booking photo appears above.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call our 24-hour dispatch center at (650) 329-2413.  Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voice mail to (650) 383-8984.
