Burglars Steal Guns from Garage of Occupied Home Overnight

Published on April 29, 2021

Palo Alto, CA – The garage of an occupied residence was burglarized overnight earlier this week, with the unknown suspects stealing four gun security cabinets containing 35 firearms.

On Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at about 6:46 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call of a residential burglary that had just been discovered in the 700 block of Garland Drive.  The investigation revealed that an unknown suspect or suspects had entered the unlocked garage of the home sometime overnight while a family of four slept inside.  No entry was made or attempted into the residential portion of the home.

The victim, a man in his fifties, reported that four gun security cabinets containing 35 firearms had been stolen.  The firearms were mostly shotguns and rifles, with two pistols.  Many were heirlooms or used for hunting.  Three of the four cabinets were locked; the fourth was old and had a lock that would malfunction.  The weapons were all unloaded and registered as required by applicable laws.  No ammunition was stolen.

An area check of surveillance cameras at nearby homes showed a possible suspect vehicle in the area of the victim’s residence at about 4:24 a.m.  A still image of that vehicle is attached to this release.  The rear seat door on the driver’s side was left open as it drove away from the home, as if being prevented from closing by something sticking out. The victim told police that vehicle was not large enough to carry all four gun security cabinets; police are speculating that other vehicles may be involved, or that vehicle may have made multiple trips.

Detectives are actively investigating this case.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call our 24-hour dispatch center at (650) 329-2413.  Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voice mail to (650) 383-8984.
