Palo Alto Fire Department Partners with the County of Santa Clara to Offer the County’s Free In-Home Vaccination Program
The Palo Alto Fire Department is participating in the County of Santa Clara free In-Home Vaccination Program for individuals who are unable to leave their place of residence. This is a County program and eligibility and the application process is administered by the County, not the City of Palo Alto.
For a patient to be eligible to receive home-based vaccination under the County of Santa Clara’s Program, the patient must be “confined to the home” (homebound) under the definition used by the federal Medicare program.
A person is considered “confined to the home” if both of the criteria below are met:
- The patient generally cannot leave his or her home because of a medical condition or disability; AND
- When he or she does leave home, it requires a considerable and taxing effort and assistance.

Individuals with health insurance are also invited to check with their health insurance provider about in-home vaccination coverage, as some do offer this service.
More on the County’s Program Process to Confirm Eligibility
A representative will make contact to complete an intake form and schedule an appointment for the individual and any other eligible household members. Intake representatives are available Monday through Friday in both English, Spanish and additional languages if needed. The time frame of the appointment is determined by program staff availability.
Eligible individuals will be vaccinated at their place of residence by one of the following: A Public Health Nurse, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic from a Fire Department partner or Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provider. There will be a 15- to 30-minute observation period to monitor the individual’s reaction to the vaccine.
Please Note: This is a County program and eligibility and the application process is administered by the County, not the City of Palo Alto. The Palo Alto Fire Department EMS staff partner with the County to offer this service to Palo Alto residents once someone is confirmed through the County’s application process and confirmed eligible by County representatives.
