"Together We Rise" Day of Celebration - MLK Day 2021
Published on January 11, 2021
Join Youth Community Service (YCS), the City of Palo Alto, and community partners in a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at our annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Monday, January 18, 2021. This year’s theme is called “Together We Rise” and it is reimagined in a virtual format in acknowledgment of our current regulations around large gatherings. Though virtual, it is as robust as ever. The event will take place from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Monday, January 18, and will include messages from our Mayor and the East Palo Alto Mayor as well as videos from partner organizations and a Youth Panel hosted by the Palo Alto High School Black Scholars United group discussing systemic racism. You will also hear from our community partners and participate in Service Learning Projects to support our local communities. For more details and to register for the Zoom link visit youthcommunityservice.org/mlk-day.
In addition to this day-of event, we also have a legacy walk quote display at Mitchell Park and an opportunity for residents to share their dreams as part of our dream tree. Throughout the weekend leading up to the event (January 16-17), the Junior League of Palo Alto • Mid Peninsula and the Palo Alto City Library will be hosting community dialogues with relevant books by age group. Check out all of the upcoming events. Let's build an even stronger community as we all learn and grow from these difficult times.
In addition, Stanford will celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this year with a free, four-day webinar and documentary film festival that will open on Friday evening, Jan. 15, and extend through Monday, Jan. 18, the federal holiday marking the birth of the civil rights leader. At the festival, the King Institute will announce the World House Project, a new initiative.
