Did you know that an old refrigerator could be one of the highest energy-using item in your home? Especially if that old refrigerator is gold, avocado green, or dark brown, it is using a lot of electricity! A great way to reduce your electric bill could be to have it recycled in an environmentally-friendly manner and replaced with a new, efficient appliance.
If you have an old refrigerator or freezer that you don't use any more, let the City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU) do the heavy lifting and take it off your hands. We will even compensate you with a $50 rebate!*
*Funds are limited. This program is available until funds run out.
Recycling Program Qualifications:
Refrigerators or freezers are eligible.
Appliances must be located at a residential or business location served by CPAU.
- Units do not need to be operating at the time of pick-up.
Appliances must be between 10 and 30 cubic feet eligible (i.e., smaller and larger units not eligible).
Once you have confirmed your pickup, the Appliance Recycling Centers of America (ARCA) will collect your refrigerator or freezer from your home or office. ARCA is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Responsible Appliance Disposal-certified recycler. That means that it can recycle the chemicals found in old refrigerators and freezers, preventing their release as greenhouse gas emissions in landfills.
