Business Advantage Program

The Business Advantage Program is designed to help customers save energy, money, and improve indoor air quality while recovering from the economic impacts of COVID-19.

What is the Business Advantage Program?

The City of Palo Alto Utilities recently launched the Business Advantage Program in partnership with GridPoint and Lime Energy to provide relief to small and medium businesses impacted by COVID-19. Heating and cooling accounts for up to 60% of a business’s energy bill. The Business Advantage Program can save you up to 10% of these costs. The program offers GridPoint’s Energy Management Solution (EMS), a combination of hardware and software that can assist with energy reduction, cost savings, and improved indoor air quality.

The Business Advantage Program offers a free Energy Management System (EMS) with “smart” thermostat, controller, zone temperature sensors, cloud-based energy management portal, and air filter for indoor air quality improvements.

What is an Energy Management System and how will it help businesses?

An Energy Management System (EMS) is a combination of hardware and software that leverages controls, automation, and machine learning to make a building more efficient. The City of Palo Alto Utilities has partnered with GridPoint to deploy their leading EMS technology to participating businesses. This can reduce energy consumption by an average of 10% per month, save businesses money, and support public health standards as we return to post-pandemic operations.

Once an EMS is installed, Palo Alto businesses will be able to remotely schedule heating and cooling, automate savings, and view insights into how their facilities are performing. Data insights include HVAC performance and potential maintenance issues. Besides lower energy bills, other benefits include; reducing risk of downtime, uncomfortable zone temperatures, unneeded run times, and more.

The Business Advantage Program also provides free Merv-13 air filters to program participants and will enable customers to implement American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommended actions that improve indoor air quality through hourly air circulation.

Energy Management Systems can cost thousands of dollars to deploy but the City Palo Alto Utilities is providing this technology at no cost to qualifying businesses.
