Clean Up Day

The Clean Up Day service provides you with curbside collection of bulky items, excess recyclables and yard trimmings, and other items. It is available for both Palo Alto residents and businesses.

Resident in Single-Family Home

The Clean Up Day service expanded in September 2019. It is now more frequent, on pre-scheduled dates, and takes additional items.

What's New

  • Two Clean Up Days each year.
  • Clean Up Days are now on pre-scheduled dates.
  • Reuse emphasis - The new program includes the collection of unbroken, reusable items. GreenWaste of Palo Alto has partnered with reuse organizations and non-profits to find new homes for reusable items in good condition, such as furniture and textiles.

Resident in Multi-Unit Complex

Residents in multi-unit complexes (without individual City refuse bills) should contact their property manager to schedule a Clean Up Day for their complex.

COVID-19 Updates

COVID-19 has resulted in most donation organizations closing or restricting items they accept. To reflect these changes, the only items currently accepted for reuse in the Clean Up Day program are:

  • Clothing and Textiles
  • Books
  • CDs/DVDs (only commercial recordings in original cases and in resale condition; no personal recordings) 
  • Furniture*

* NEW AUGUST 2021: 
Clean, gently used furniture will once again be accepted for donation. Visit GreenWaste of Palo Alto for specific furniture guidelines.

 

Please do NOT place antiques out for donation through the Clean Up Day program. They can be more appropriately re-homed through other programs.

 

Broken, stained, or otherwise low-quality furniture, kitchenware and generic household items may still be set out, but will be recycled instead of reused. Drivers are knowledgeable of the donation standards and will determine what can be reused versus recycled.
