Grate Your Own Cheese

Cheese grater with block of cheese partially grated

Do you use grated cheese? Lighten the amount of “stuff” you create by buying your cheese in a block and grating it yourself. You can grate it by hand or with a food processor – whatever works for you.

Not only does block cheese have significantly less packaging than tubs and bags of grated cheese, it doesn’t contain those extra ingredients to keep it from clumping and molding, and you get the rinds which you can add to your soups and stocks for flavor.

You can grate the whole block in advance and store it in a reusable container so it’s ready to use when you need it. Or you can grate it as you go. Keep in mind that if you pre-grate the whole block of cheese it won’t last as long as the cheese you buy pre-grated. That’s because it doesn’t have all the additives.

Grating your own cheese may not work for you for a variety of reasons. That's ok. Purchasing cheese (or any product really) in the least amount of packaging that you can is also helpful in the effort to reduce waste.

Added bonus: If you use a manual grater you get in a bit of exercise. Less waste, bigger biceps…what’s not to like?
