Project Description

Fire Station No. 3, located at 799 Embarcadero Road in Palo Alto is a wood framed structure built in 1948 and is approximately 3,500 sf. The new Fire Station No. 3  replaced the aging Fire Station No. 3 and now meets current California Building Codes (CBC), Essential Services Building Seismic Safety Act, American with Disabilities Act (ADA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and OSHA standards. Per City Council policy established in 2007, the building was designed to attain LEED Silver Certification.

The Fire Station No. 3 Replacement project is a Council Infrastructure Plan project and was completed in March 2020. Fire Station No. 4 Replacement Project, located at 3600 Middlefield Road, is next in line when funding is available.

Project Status

THIS PROJECT WAS COMPLETE AS OF MARCH 2020.

Fire Station 3 is the first project to be completed that is part of Palo Alto’s 2014 Infrastructure Plan adopted by the City Council. The new station sits harmoniously within the surrounding elements, while clearly identifying itself as a new civic structure for the City of Palo Alto. This station was not only designed and built to meet NFPA and building codes, but is as an essential service building, having the capacity to be fully operational during and after a major disaster. Identifying sustainable and environmental friendly priorities early in the project and continuing these goals into construction allowed the station to receive LEED Gold Certification. The station has enhanced the fire fighters’ quality of life, providing a safe and healthy living and working environment. The new station has optimized the fire departments emergency response times and daily operations. Providing a public plaza, a bike repair station and expanding the corner waiting area for pedestrians to safely wait and gather are just some of many elements the station has incorporated to help improve the fire department’s presence and partnership with the community. After the original station was demolished, the existing station sign was salvaged and reinstalled on site to display a small piece of community history.

Scope of Work

The project included installation of a Temporary Fire Station No. 3, located at 2000 Geng Road,  in order to maintain essential services to the public for a period of up to two years.
