File a Police Report

If you need a police report to document a minor crime or non-injury traffic collision, you can obtain one online by following the instructions below.

Step 1.Rules and requirements

  • You must be 18 years old and be the victim of the crime.
  • There must be no suspect information or any physical evidence (gloves, pry tools, etc.) that require collection.
  • The incident must have occurred in Palo Alto.
  • For thefts, the value of the total loss must be less than $5,000.
  • Stolen vehicles, stolen license plates, and stolen firearms may NOT be reported online.
  • It is a crime to file a false police report.

Step 2.Ensure eligibility

You may only report the following types of incidents online. To report other types of incidents, please call our 24-hour dispatch center at (650) 329-2413.

  • Auto burglary or thefts from vehicles
  • Vandalism of personal property (if not classified as a hate crime)
  • Lost property
  • Harassing phone calls (hang-ups, obscene language, etc.)
  • Minor traffic collisions (non-injury, property damage only)
  • Hit and run non-injury traffic collisions
  • Thefts of bicycles
  • Thefts of vehicle parts (such as a catalytic converter or hood ornament)
  • Identity theft involving credit card fraud
  • Phone scams
  • Child custody order violation
  • Shoplifting where no prosecution is desired
  • Traffic complaint

  • After submission of your report, you will immediately receive a temporary report number and be able to print a copy of the report for your records.
  • All incidents reported will be reviewed and, upon approval, become an official police report.
