Employee Benefits

The City of Palo Alto offers its employees a generous benefits package, featuring family medical coverage, retirement plans, twelve paid holidays per year, paid parental leave and more.

Internal Employee Benefits Portal

For employees and their family: 

  • Medical Plans - Choice of PPO and HMO coverage, including plans that are fully paid by the City  
  • Dental Plan - Fully paid employee and dependent coverage
  • Vision Plan - Fully paid employee and dependent coverage
  • Parental Leave - up to 6 weeks of fully paid leave
  • Flexible Spending Accounts - tax exempt for Healthcare and Childcare expenses


For employees wellbeing:

  • Two to five weeks vacation per year depending on years of service
  • 12 paid holidays per year
  • 96 hours annual sick leave


For employees development and future planning: 

  • Tuition, Student Loan Reimbursement and Professional Development Programs depending employment unit 
  • Life and AD&D insurance - fully paid coverage equal to your annual salary
  • Supplemental Life Insurance - voluntary coverage options available
  • Long Term Disability plan - fully paid coverage depending on unit and voluntary coverage options available


For employees retirement - California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS):

  • 2% of your final salary at age 60 (Misc Classic Members, One-year final compensation)
  • 2% of your final salary at age 62 (Misc New Members, Three-year final compensation)
  • 3% of your final salary at age 55 (Safety Classic Members, Three-year final compensation)
  • 2.7% of your final salary at age 57 (Safety New Members, Three-year final compensation)
  • Retiree Medical benefits for employee and dependents after 10 years of service
  • Tax-exempt retirement savings benefit known as a government 457(b) deferred compensation plan


Please note: The City does not participate in CA State Disability Insurance (SDI) or Social Security. Since the City does not participate in SDI, City employees are not eligible to claim against the State’s Pregnancy Disability Leave or Paid Family Leave programs.
