About the Artist
"It's about promoting and showing folks—especially teens—that they do have a future, they don't have to follow this narrative that we see on TV: 'If you're trans, you're going to die. If you're queer, you're going to die. If you're fat, you're going to die. If you're disabled, you're going to die. If you’re a POC, you’re going to die.' I try to reject the fashion industry as much as possible.”—Sky Cubacub in the Chicago Tribune
Sky Cubacub (They/Them/Xe/Xem/Xyr) is a non-binary queer and disabled Filipinx human from Chicago, IL. They are the creator of Rebirth Garments, a line of exciting wearables for trans, queer, and disabled people of all sizes and ages.
Defying definition, Rebirth Garments and accessories challenge mainstream beauty standards. Trans and disabled communities have very particular clothing needs that are not adequately served by mainstream designers, and fashion made by non-disabled people can be dull and unimaginative. The work of Rebirth Garments transcends our notion of what clothing can be, employing bespoke tailoring for each person, bright colors, exuberant fabrics, and innovative designs. Their process and performance videos use music, inclusion, and innovative audio description.
Sky Cubacub is the editor of the Radical Visibility Zine, created a queer fashion program with Chicago Public Library called “Radical Fit”, and has lectured and performed widely. They were named 2018 Chicagoan of the Year by the Chicago Tribune and are a 2019/2020 Kennedy Center Citizen Artist and a 2021 Ford Foundation Disability Futures Fellow.
