Tunnel Digging Begins
|
Palo Alto, CA -- Beginning on November 19, construction
crews will be working during the nighttime hours to construct the
Homer Avenue Caltrain Undercrossing Project. Given the limited use
and restrictions in the railroad right-of-way and scheduled track
closures until March 2004, nighttime work is required to complete
the project. The nighttime work will take place near and under the
Caltrain tracks, and must be done at night while train traffic is
limited. Crews will install piles, retaining walls and slabs. The
nighttime work is expected to be finished during the second week
of January, weather permitting.
Hours when the public can expect construction noise and traffic
are from 9 pm to 4 am Monday through Thursday, and from 10 pm Friday
to 4 am Monday on weekends. The project site will also need adequate
lighting during this time. "We're gong to work very closely with
the contractor and the Palo Alto Police Department to minimize the
impact to neighboring residents and businesses," said Senior Engineer
Elizabeth Ames.
The contractor, Anderson Pacific Engineering and Construction, Inc.,
has been meeting with residents from Alma Place and representatives
from nearby businesses to hear their questions and concerns. Every
effort will be made to finish the work quickly, safely, and with
minimal disruption.
The Homer Avenue Caltrain Undercrossing will be a pedestrian/bicycle
tunnel approximately 140 feet long and 18 feet wide. The undercrossing
will provide a safe and convenient way for pedestrians and bicyclists
to access the Caltrain Station, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation,
Stanford University and nearby businesses from downtown Palo Alto.
The $5.4 million construction project is being funded almost entirely
by Federal/State transportation funds and private development fees.
Questions about the project should be directed to: Woojae Kim, Project
Engineer, (650) 329-2446 or

City shall be, Humayun Nasser, Field Engineer, (925) 683-7709.
