Lockheed
Martin Commits to Landmark Large-Scale Renewable
Power Purchase from the City of Palo Alto Utilities
|
Palo Alto, CA -- The
City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU), in partnership with the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), announced today Lockheed
Martin, one of the nation's leading U.S. defense and aerospace contractors,
will participate in its clean renewable energy program PaloAltoGreen.
Lockheed Martin will purchase 10% of its Palo Alto facilities' power
requirements, or 100% of the output of one large-scale wind turbine,
on an annual basis. This is the first renewable power purchase nationally
by a leading U.S. defense and aerospace contractor, according to
the U.S. EPA.
Derived from clean wind and solar generation sources, Lockheed Martin's
renewable power commitment - 1800 MWhs annually - is the largest
clean power commitment yet to the PaloAltoGreen program
and makes Lockheed Martin a member of the U.S. EPA's Green Power
Partnership for its Palo Alto campus.
"We are pleased by Lockheed Martin's level of participation in PaloAltoGreen,
the largest single financial commitment to renewable energy to date
by one of our utility customers," said John Ulrich, City of Palo
Alto Director of Utilities. "We hope other businesses in our community
will also support PaloAltoGreen."
Lockheed Martin's clean power commitment will provide environmental
savings through prevention of the release of 1,129 tons of carbon
dioxide, a key greenhouse gas. This is the climate impact equivalent
to planting 296 acres of forest.
"Conventional electricity generation is the nation's single largest
industrial source of air pollution," said EPA Regional Administrator
Wayne Nastri. "Lockheed Martin and other Palo Alto organizations
buying green power are providing a great example of environmental
leadership."
"The company's commitment to renewable power is an extension of
a broad set of initiatives we've implemented nationally to conserve
energy and minimize our impact on the environment," stated Dr. James
T. Ryder, Ph.D., Lockheed Martin Director of Technology Development.

participating in the program, PaloAltoGreen has enrolled
community participation at a faster rate than any other community
in the country. PaloAltoGreen is certified by the
