Rescue Training by Palo Alto Firefighters
|
Palo Alto, CA -- Performing a physical rescue of a victim
trapped in building collapse is anything but routine. Beginning
Tuesday, September 16 and on scheduled days throughout the remainder
of the month of September, Palo Alto firefighters will be honing
their skills to perform the highly technical rescues involved in
extricating victims trapped during structural collapse or from other
types of confined spaces.
The training will be held at Greer Park near W. Bayshore Rd. between
9:00 am and 5:00 pm on scheduled days during the month and there
will be minimum noise (no sirens will be used as part of the training).
Traffic in the area will not be impacted.
When dealing with structural collapse in a rescue situation, fire
personnel must employ unique tactics, procedures, and specialized
equipment. Technical rescue incidents can create a myriad of entrapment
problems for rescuers. If not handled properly, rescuers themselves
could become victims if proper procedures are not followed.
During the September training, firefighters will practice site
assessment to determine the safest and most effective means to extricate
the victim. They will also utilize various shoring techniques, hoisting
techniques, and debris removal techniques to gain access to the
victim and bring them out to safety.
Questions regarding the training can be directed to Deputy Fire
Chief Judy Jewell at 650-329-2489. Media are invited to attend the
training on Wednesday, September 24 from 1:30 to 3 pm for photo
opportunities and interviews with firefighters.
