Mayor's
Ride Highlights Bike Month
|
Palo Alto, CA -- As part of the City of Palo Alto's Bike
Month activities, Mayor Dena Mossar will host a community bicycle
ride on Saturday, May 10th. The event is free and open to the public
and the community is invited to attend.
"This is really much more than just a bike ride. It's an affirmation
of our common goal of being a town where people can bike and walk
safely," said Mossar, "and that's why I want members of
the community to join me."
The ride begins at 10:00 a.m. at City Hall, 250 Hamilton Avenue
and follows Bryant Street, the Ellen Fletcher Bicycle Boulevard,
south to the Greenmeadow Community Center. Community Police representatives
will be present at the start and end of the ride to license bicycles.
Residents are invited to join at the start of the ride, somewhere
in the middle, or at the end. "People are welcome anywhere
along the route," said Mossar.
The route will follow Bryant Street south to Carlson and will end
at the Greenmeadow Community Center at 303 Parkside Drive. The ride
will go at a pace that accommodates all riders and will follow all
traffic laws. If you are planning on joining the ride along the
route please account for riding time from City Hall.
According to Gayle Likens, Transportation Projects Manager, Palo
Alto hosts over 36 miles of bike lanes. Yet concerns still exist
regarding the safety of our school children getting to and from
schools. "We want to ensure that our streets are safe for bicycle
riders of all ages and abilities and we need and welcome community
support."
Questions about the ride can be directed to Amanda Jones, Transportation
Coordinator for the City, at 329-2568. For more information on Bike
Month events in Palo Alto go to www.cityofpaloalto.org and click
