City of Palo Alto Responds to Increased Alert

Palo Alto, CA -- With the United States at a heightened alert for terrorist activity (currently condition “Orange”), Palo Alto Police have increased their vigilance and preparations.

“With the threat of war or terrorist act, we are ready for a possible Red Alert,” said Chief Dwyer. “Meanwhile, we are increasing our patrol and surveillance activity to reflect the Orange threat level issued by the Department of Homeland Security.”

Should it become necessary, Police have a Red Alert plan in place. The plan covers intelligence, operations, communications, logistics, and coordination with other agencies.

“We are in constant communication with the California Anti-Terrorism Information Center (CATIC) and the FBI,” said Chief Dwyer. “The probability of terrorist activity in Palo Alto is low, but we cannot dismiss it. We must be ready.”

The City has online resources on emergency preparedness. Go to the city’s web site (www.cityofpaloalto.org) and click on “Emergency Services.” The Office of Emergency Services may be reached Monday-Friday at 617-3197.

Residents are reminded to call 9-1-1 in case of an emergency and 329-2413 for non-emergencies. The number for the Emergency Bulletin recording is 329-2420.
