Checkpoint after Stanford football game.
|
Palo Alto, CA -- Palo Alto Police,
with help from officers from several local Departments will conduct
a Sobriety Checkpoint on Saturday, November 4, after the Stanford-USC
football game. Designed to coincide with post-Game traffic, officers
will be posted from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. to screen for impaired
drivers.
55,000 fans are expected to watch the USC-Stanford game. No alcoholic
beverages are allowed inside the stadium, but there is a storied
tradition of “tailgate” parties in the Stanford groves
and surrounding streets. Police hope to educate the attendees of
the game, and to discourage any of the revelers from driving under
the influence on their way home from the event.
A typical first-time conviction for DUI will cost a minimum of $2500.00
in fines and fees, the loss of a driver license for one to four
months, and a required fifteen-week long course, in addition to
possible jail time. Worse, of course, would be the possibility of
causing injury or death as a result of a collision.
“You don’t have to be drunk to be an impaired driver.
If you drink at all – don’t drive!. Designate a sober
driver, take public transportation or call a taxi,” said Traffic
officer Chris Hammett. “Don’t risk becoming a statistic.”
