At its first meeting of the New Year on Jan. 3, the Palo Alto City Council unanimously elected Councilmember Greg Scharff as Mayor and Councilmember Liz Kniss as Vice Mayor. This is the second time Scharff has been elected Mayor since joining the Council in 2009. He first served as Mayor in 2013, and served as Vice Mayor in 2012 and 2016. He was re-elected to the City Council in 2014. He has served on the Finance Committee (chair in 2011), Policy and Services Committee, Council Appointed Officer Committee (chair), City/School Committee, and was a member of the Infrastructure Committee, Regional Housing Mandate Committee and Utilities Advisory Committee Representative.
“Being Mayor of Palo Alto is a real honor,” said Scharff who also praised his Council colleagues saying, “Palo Alto is extremely lucky to have you all as City Council members.”
Councilmember Liz Kniss, who was re-elected to another term on the Council, was selected as Vice Mayor and stressed the importance of working on a regional basis to tackle issues. Newly elected Councilmembers Adrian Fine, Lydia Kou and Greg Tanaka were also sworn in to begin their first terms on the City Council. Outgoing Mayor Pat Burt, and Councilmembers Greg Schmid and Marc Berman were also recognized and honored for their service on the Council. Burt and Schmid were both termed out and Berman was elected as Assemblymember for the 24th District.
