45 Days of Clay Artist Residencies

The Palo Alto Art Center has announced the selection of three ceramic artists for its 45 Days of Clay residency program. The artists who have been chosen to participate in the residency program from June 23-August 20 are Malia Landis, Wesley Wright, and Matthew Goldberg.

The process to vet these artists was highly competitive, with a selection team composed of Art Center program staff and arts professionals. In the course of their respective residencies, these artists will create a new body of work in the ceramic studio, while engaging with students and members of the community.

“We were excited by the quality and originality of all the applicants for the 45 Days of Clay residency” says Studio Program Director Fanny Retsek. “It was a tough decision, but we ultimately chose Matthew Goldberg and the collaborative of Malia Landis and Wesley Wright because their work is both conceptually and technically accomplished, and their proposed workshops and experience with engaging a studio community were exceptional.”

The first residency will feature Landis and Wright, working as a team. Wright creates imaginative, highly detailed animal sculptures that address environmental issues, and Landis finds inspiration in plants and animals for her meticulous porcelain sculptures. Both Wright and Landis received a BA from Humboldt State University and an MFA from San Jose State University.

Workshop dates will be August 9 and 16, 6-10 p.m., and an artists’ reception will be held on June 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Exhibition dates for their artwork will be January 20-March 19, 2017.

The second residency will also take place from June 23-August 20, and will highlight San Francisco-based artist Matthew Goldberg, who creates mixed-media ceramic sculptures that are unexpected and humorous. He received his BA from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Goldberg’s workshop dates will be July 19 and 26, and an artist reception will be held on June 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m. The exhibition dates for his artwork are January 20-March 19, 2017.
