Planned California Avenue Streetscape Improvements Now Underway

California Avenue - Volunteer Tree Planting on January 30th

A volunteer tree planting event hosted by the City of Palo Alto and in conjunction with the non-profit organization CANOPY is scheduled for Saturday, January 30, from 9:30AM - 12:30 PM on California Avenue. Volunteers will receive training before planting the trees in organized teams. There will also be a Mayor's Tree Planting Ceremony at 12:30 PM at 414 California Avenue. Event will be held rain or shine.

The California Avenue Streetscape Improvements project has two phases. Phase I is to address the need to replant trees along California Avenue from El Camino Real to the fountain area near the CalTrain station.  Phase II  includes the replacement of furnishings, such as benches, bike racks, newspaper racks, kiosks, trash and recycling containers, street resurfacing and restriping.  Phase II also includes the possibility of adding potted plants and reducing the traffic lanes from two to one lane in each direction to encourage a more shared use road with bicycles.

In November, the City Council approved the final tree planting plan below and planting will begin in January 2010.

Phase I - Project Timeline and Impacts (January- February 2010)

Timeline is January 4 through February 2010, weather permitting.
Construction Hours are M-F, 9 AM to 4 PM.
Crews intend to progress down one side of the street at a time. Work will start on northwest side of California Avenue, near the train station, go towards El Camino Real, and return back on the other side of street.
No-parking signs will be posted 72 hours in advance of work in each area. Please pay attention to the dates and times listed on the no-parking signs.
There will be temporary periods of reduced street parking available.
Noisy construction work will be minimized during lunch time near restaurants, as much as possible.

Open space area tree planting will be done intermittently throughout.
Work may be delayed due to weather conditions.

Work to be done

  • Work start with saw-cutting in the sidewalk at the tree planting locations followed by demolition and excavation to prepare the tree wells for planting.
  • Set frames in new concrete and install new tree grates.
  • Replant dozens of street trees within sidewalk areas using Canopy volunteers; planting event planned for January 30.
  • Replant over 60 deciduous and evergreen trees along California Avenue from El Camino Real to the fountain area near the CalTrain station by project completion.
