Ammunition for Disposal

Palo Alto Police Department is no longer able to accept ammunition for disposal

February 10, 2010

Due to significantly high costs in the transportation and destruction of ammunition, the Palo Alto Police Department is no longer able to accept ammunition. According to the Department of Transportation, ammunition is considered to be a Hazardous Material. Residents interested in disposing of personal ammunition may contact the following companies who are licensed in the transportation and destruction of this type of material:

  • Veolia Environmental Services (formerly Onyx) - Located in Illinois…will provide shipping from CA (satellite office in Fremont) 510-440-7379 or 510-656-4926
  • EBV Explosives Environmental Co. - Located in Missouri - 801-295-2003

This is not a free service; these companies are licensed to dispose of live ammunition at a cost to the general public.

Disposal of ammunition in any public landfill or in any fashion other than through approved hazardous materials facilities is unlawful and potentially dangerous to the public and the environment.  The Palo Alto Police Department recommends the disposal of ammunition only through licensed facilities.
