Regulations that Vary by Community

Impoundment (Picking up) of at large dogs, confined dogs, and confined cats:

  • Palo Alto: A regular, on-duty Animal Control Officer (ACO) will respond. Call 329-2413.
  • Los Altos, Los Altos Hills:  A regular, on-duty Animal Control Officer (ACO) will respond. Call 329-2413.

Residents can either bring confined, stray dogs and cats to Animal Services during regular hours (Monday - Saturday, 11:00am - 5:30pm, except holidays and every other Friday, or have them picked up any day (8:00am - 5:00pm) by a regular, on-duty ACO, as available.

  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills:  A regular, on-duty Santa Clara County ACO (408-465-2920) will respond.

Controlling vicious, attacking, or injured dogs and cats:

  • Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills: This is a priority call. A regular, on-duty ACO will respond (after hours, an on-call ACO will respond) to capture. Call Animal Services (496-5971) for more information, or, after hours, call Dispatch (329-2413).
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: A regular, on-duty Santa Clara County ACO (408-465-2920) will respond.

Veterinary care for injured stray dogs and cats:

  • Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills: This is a priority call. A regular or on-call ACO will respond at any time to transport injured, stray, domestic animals to veterinary attention. Call Dispatch (329-2413).
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: Santa Clara County Animal Control will respond 24 hours a day. During business hours, call 408-465-2920; after hours, call the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office (408-299-3233).

Controlling stray, healthy wildlife (note: it is not legal to trap and relocate wildlife without a permit):

  • Palo Alto: A regular, on-duty ACO may respond with suggested deterrents, as time permits. Call Animal Services for more information (496-5971).
  • Los Altos, Los Altos Hills: Residents can seek assistance from Vector Control of Santa Clara County regarding skunks, rats, opossums, raccoons, and bats. Call Vector Control at 1-800-675-1155, weekdays only.
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: Residents can seek assistance from Vector Control of Santa Clara County regarding skunks, rats, opossums, raccoons, and bats. Call Vector Control at 1 800 675 1155, weekdays only.

Care of sick or injured wildlife:

  • Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Los Altos Hills: Residents can deliver sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife to Palo Alto Animal Services during business hours, or call 650-329-2413 for and Animal Control Officer to pick up. We are only a holding facility, and we have all wildlife transported to the Peninsula Humane Society. Alternatively, residents can deliver wildlife to the Peninsula Humane Society directly at 1450 Rollins Rd., Burlingame, CA; or call them at 650-340-7022 x456
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: Call the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley (408-283-0744). No transport service is available for wildlife.

Disposal of dead stray animals (including wildlife):

  • Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills: Regular, on-duty ACO will pick up dead, stray, animals weighing up to 100 lbs. Call Dispatch (329-2413). ACO's will respond to dead deer on public roads, however on private property residents are responsible to arrange removal from San Jose Tallow Works (408-452-8777) for a fee.
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: A regular, on-duty Santa Clara County ACO will pick up dead, stray animals (408-465-2920).

Rescue of dogs and cats in distress (e.g. dogs in hot cars):

  • Palo Alto: Regular or on-call ACO will respond to provide aid, or to transport dog or cat to vet or Animal Services (Dispatch: 329- 2413).
  • Los Altos: Call Los Altos Police Department at 650-947-2770
  • Los Altos Hills: Call Santa Clara County Sheriff at 408-868-6600
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: A regular, on-duty Santa Clara County ACO will respond at 408-465-2920.

Rescue of cats in trees:

  • All jurisdictions: An Animal Control officer will respond, however some cats will come down from the tree by themselves. ACO's do not have equipment to remove cats from trees, and often rely on Public Works or the Fire Dept. Also, for owned cats, some private tree services will handle.
