The most widely known definition of sustainable development comes from the Brundtland Commission, which defined sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
The Planning and Community Environment Department role is applying this goal to the City’s zoning regulations, comprehensive plan, infrastructure upgrades, buildings, and the transportation sector.Sustainable development strategies can be incorporated in public infrastructure projects, or on an individual parcel, and how that parcel fits with others to form a neighborhood, and how neighborhoods interact to form the City.
Throughout the development process of site selection, planning, design and construction there are opportunities to integrate concepts of resource efficiency, environmental sensitivity, equity, connection and to encourage alternative transportation.
