Lifeguarding

Become a Palo Alto Lifeguard Today!

  1. Certification
There are two opportunities for applicants to get certified through the City of Palo Alto:
    1. We need Lifeguards for our spring recreation swim season, which starts Saturday 5/13. Shifts would be Saturdays and/or Sundays from 12-5pm with additional hours if interested. Please contact Aquatics Coordinator Tyler Stetson to let him know if you are available to start then and can work these shifts! If available, we can offer a certification training just for spring applicants the last weekend in April (4/29 - 4/30) or first weekend in May (5/6 - 5/7).
    2. For summer applicants starting in June after school is out: Wait to get certified during the City's In-Service week (6/5 - 6/9)

This certification training is open to City of Palo Alto Lifeguards only. In addition to receiving the required American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification, staff will learn the necessary skills to work for us this summer. Staff must attend the entire certification week (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm)!

It is strongly advised that prospective applicants practice the prerequisite skills listed below to ensure they can continue with the certification. Even if participants finish the pre-employment steps and are cleared to work, if they don't pass the prerequisite skills, they cannot work for our program unless they obtain their certification elsewhere.

      Prerequisite skill test-out:
      • Be 15 years of age by end of course. Must show proof of age, which can be a driver's license, state identification, birth certificate or passport.
      • Swim 300 yards (12 laps) continuously using a combination of both freestyle and breaststroke.
      • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
      • Complete a timed event (10-pound brick retrieval) within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  2. Application
Prospective applicants can submit an application online via the following link:

  3. Interview
Once prospective applicants submit their application, they can sign up for an interview online via the following link:

Applicants will check-in at the front desk of the Lucie Stern Community Center (1305 Middlefield Rd) on the day of their interview. Applicants should come prepared with weekly availability and a list of all known commitments including school, second jobs, sport practices, college orientations, and travel dates!
