Commonly referred to as 'street trees', these trees are all trees growing within the street right-of-way (publicly-owned), outside of private property. In some cases, the property line may lie several feet behind the sidewalk. General questions regarding street tree planting, branch breakage or damage should be addressed to Public Works Operations, 650-496-5953.
Palo Alto Municipal Code, Chapter 8.04.020 protects these trees from damage or injury, subject to specified penalties. Any work in the proximity of street trees is be be consistent with standards outlined in the City's tree Technical Manual. A permit from Public Works Department is required prior to any work, including pruning or any soil excavation on or around these trees. Permit inquiry can be directed to the Public Works Operations, 650-496-5953.
