The Palo Alto Landfill processes yard trimmings collected from residents into compost, a rich soil amendment. Residents are offered some of this compost through the "Compost Giveaway Days"  (for Palo Alto residents only).

At the Compost Giveaways, residents may receive up to one cubic yard of compost, which equals about six full trash cans. Residents should bring shovels, containers to carry the compost home, and proof of residency (driver's license).

The Compost Giveaways take place at the Landfill, located at the East end of Embarcadero Road.

Free Mulch
The Sunnyvale Material and Recovery Transfer (SMaRT) Station in Sunnyvale offers ground greenwaste (not compost) at no charge. This material can be used as a mulch or compost feedstock. Call the SMaRT Station at (408) 752-8530 for additional information.
