Monthly Workshops
The City of Palo Alto Zero Waste Program offers monthly compost workshops, taught by Master Composters. Over 1000 Palo Altans have participated in these workshops and learned how easy and low maintenance composting can be.
What is composting?
Composting is a natural process of decomposition and recycling of organic material such as yard trimmings and food waste into a humus-rich soil amendment known as compost.
Why compost?
- It saves you money. Composting kitchen scraps and yard trimmings significantly reduces the amount of trash you throw out and can save you money on your garbage bill. You also save money by not having to buy soil amendments or fertilizers.
- Compost helps garden and houseplants by improving the fertility and health of the soil.
- It saves water by helping the soil hold moisture.
- It helps the environment by keeping valuable organic resources out of landfills.
Other specific composting questions can be answered by calling the Santa Clara County compost hotline at (408) 918-4640.
