Beginning March 1, 2009, the Palo Alto Landfill will no longer be accepting commercially-generated loads of garbage, in an effort to keep the landfill available for residential use.
Residential waste generated from a Palo Alto residence will continue to be accepted with the following guidelines:
Resident must show a current driver’s license or California ID card with a Palo Alto residential address,
Resident must bring the load or accompany the load of waste to the landfill.
Commercial garbage will be accepted at the Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer (SMaRT) Station located at 301 Carl Road, Sunnyvale, 408-752-8530. The nearest facility that accepts construction and demolition debris for recycling is the Zanker Materials Recovery 675 Los Esteros Road, San Jose, 408-263-2384.
The following materials will continue to be accepted from the commercial sector for recycling:
Yard trimmings,
Asphalt/concrete/rock (2 cubic yard maximum per load),
Special charge items—appliances, mattresses and box springs and tires (36” or less in diameter),
Dirt—only as needed as determined by the Palo Alto Landfill Supervisor.
