Regulations that Vary by Community

Impoundment (Picking up) of confined, stray dogs and cats:

  • Palo Alto: A regular, on-duty Animal Control Officer (ACO) will respond. Call 496-5971.
  • Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View: Residents can either bring confined, stray dogs and cats to Animal Services during regular hours (Monday - Saturday, 11:00am - 5:30pm, except holidays and every other Friday, or have them picked up any day (8:30am - 5:00pm) by a regular, on-duty ACO, as available.
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: Limited service is available. A regular, on-duty Santa Clara County ACO (408-779-4791) will respond, but expect long delays. You may take strays at no cost, 24 hours a day, to the Humane Association of Santa Clara Valley.

Controlling vicious, attacking, or injured dogs and cats:

  • Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View: This is a priority call. A regular, on-duty ACO will respond (after hours, an on-call ACO will respond) to capture. Call Animal Services (496-5971) for more information, or, after hours, call Dispatch (329-2413).
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: A regular, on-duty Santa Clara County ACO (408-779-4791) will respond.

Veterinary care for injured stray dogs and cats:

  • Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View: This is a priority call. A regular or on-call ACO will respond at any time to transport injured, stray, domestic animals to veterinary attention. Call Dispatch (329-2413).
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: The person calling in the report must stand by until an officer arrives. Santa Clara County Animal Control will respond 24 hours a day. During business hours, call 408-779-4791; after hours, call the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office (408-299-3233).

Controlling stray, healthy wildlife (note: it is not legal to trap and relocate wildlife without a permit):

  • Palo Alto: A regular, on-duty ACO may respond with suggested deterrents, as time permits. Call Animal Services for more information (496-5971).
  • Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View: Residents can seek assistance from Vector Control of Santa Clara County regarding skunks, rats, opossums, raccoons, and bats. Call Vector Control at 1-800-675-1155, weekdays only.
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: Residents can seek assistance from Vector Control of Santa Clara County regarding skunks, rats, opossums, raccoons, and bats. Call Vector Control at 1 800 675 1155, weekdays only.

Care of injured wildlife:

  • Palo Alto: Residents can deliver injured wildlife to the Wildlife Rescue Center, 4000 Middlefield Road, #V, Palo Alto (494-7283). No transport service is available for wildlife.
  • Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View: Residents can deliver injured wildlife to the Wildlife Rescue Center, 4000 Middlefield Road, #V, Palo Alto (494-7283).
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: Call the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley (408-283-0744). No transport service is available for wildlife.

Disposal of dead stray animals (including wildlife):

  • Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View: Regular, on-duty ACO will pick up dead, stray, animals weighing up to 100 lbs. Call Dispatch (329-2413). ACO's will pick up deer from roads; on private property, San Jose Tallow Works (408-452-8777) will pick up deer for a fee.
  • Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: This is a low-priority call. A regular, on-duty Santa Clara County ACO will pick up dead, stray animals (408-779-4791).

Rescue of dogs and cats in distress (e.g. dogs in hot cars):

  • Palo Alto: Regular or on-call ACO will respond to provide aid, or to transport dog or cat to vet or Animal Services (Dispatch: 329- 2413).
  • Los Altos, Mountain View: Call Police Department.
  • Los Altos Hills, Unincorporated Santa Clara County, Stanford University, Moffett Field, San Antonio Hills: No services available.

Rescue of cats in trees:

  • All jurisdictions: Some private tree services will handle this.
