Getting Started with Construction

On this page you will find some basic information regarding construction regulations in Palo Alto.

The Development Center is located at:
285 Hamilton Avenue, across the street from City Hall.
Office hours are M-F, 8-4, except Wednesday: 9-4.
The Development Center is closed during the noon hour.

Single Family Homes
Most construction on single family homes require a building permit. This includes remodeling, demolition, additions, and replacing a roof, water-heater or furnace. 2nd -story additions & new 2 story homes require a planning application approval prior to submitting a building permit application.

Multi-Family Homes
Most construction on multi-family homes require a building permit. This includes remodeling, demolition, additions, and replacement of a roof, water-heater or furnace. A planning application may be required in addition to a building permit.

Commercial Development
Construction on commercial (non-residential) property requires a building permit. This includes interior remodel or sign for a new tenant, as well as any addition, demolition, or change in use. A planning application is typically required prior to submitting a building permit application.
