The City of Palo Alto has a variety of Environmental programs and services to protect and enhance Palo Alto's environment. These programs and services are administered or provided by different City departments.

The goal of the Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Program and the Underground Storage Tank Program are to protect the public and environmental health and safety through the enforcement of local and state laws, regulations and ordinances by inspecting and permitting all facilities in the City that use, handle or store hazardous materials.

Environmental Information and Services - (City's main links to environmental programs and services)

Underground Storage Tank Sites - This is a list of facilities in Palo Alto that have active underground storage tanks (USTs). Note that all USTs sites are inspected annually by Hazardous Materials Program staff to ensure safe operation and compliance with state and local regulations. For more information please contact the Fire Prevention Bureau Hazardous Materials Program at 650-329-2184.

Groundwater Contamination Sites - This is a link to the California State Water Resources Control Board's database of contamination sites. Select the Site/Facility Finder and enter the street name (use an * in front and behind the name) and the city to find information regarding contamination sites on any given street. This database has information regarding fuel and non fuel leak sites.

  • The San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) share responsibility for oversight of the investigation, cleanup and monitoring of non fuel leak sites. For more information regarding these sites please contact the RWQCB at 510-622-2300 or refer to their website.
  • The Santa Clara County Department of Environmental Health's (DEH) Leaking Underground Storage Tank Oversight Program has been delegated oversight authority for gasoline, diesel and other fuel leak contamination sites by the RWQCB. For more information regarding these sites please contact the DEH at 408-918-3400 or refer to their website.
