Palo Alto Unified School District uses the Reading Recovery System for beginning readers. The Library has lists of titles on various levels of the Reading Recovery system. These lists (at the bottom of this page) were put together by the University of Arkansas.
Other schools in California may use the Lexile Scale. If you know titles on the Reading Recovery scale, you can then search for more titles on that level using the Lexile system.
The Lexile Framework for Reading webpage allows you to search tens of thousands of book titles for their Lexile measure; or you may search by Lexile measure for appropriate titles.
Novelist K-8, one of the Library's online databases, lists Lexile scores. You may access this database from any computer with Internet access -- all you need is a Palo Alto library card. Once you've selected Novelist from the list of databases, click on Search Our Database. There are then several ways to proceed.
If you know a title that is in the Lexile range you are looking for, search that title. The Lexile score will appear, along with the information on that title. You may then search for other books with a similar score (it is recommended that you select a range of 100 points below to 50 points above the desired score).
If you know what score you need but do not know any titles, select Boolean Search. You can then enter the Lexile range, plus any subjects you choose.
