Baylands Nature Preserve Natural Calendar

In addition to the many docent-led nature walks, ecology classes and exploration programs, visitors will enjoy the following special events at the Baylands:

Arrival of the Swallows: Second week in March
The next best thing to visiting the Mission of San Juan Capistrano: Hundreds of Barn and Cliff Swallows return to build their intricate mud nests along the eaves of the Baylands Nature Center.

Herons Come Home to Roost:  Beginning the first week in April
At the east edge of the Duck Pond (near the cement fountain), look to the tops of the close-by palm trees to see herons building their unique twig nests and fostering their young.

Bay Area Bird Photographers Exhibitions:
This group, sponsored by the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, meets the first Wednesday of each month (except June, July, and August) from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at the Nature Center, 2775 Embarcadero Road. Amateur and professional wildlife photographers meet to share their work and photographic techniques. Anyone interested is invited to attend. (Free.)

Guided Summer Canoe Trips
Meet at the Baylands Sailing Station, east end of Embarcadero Road. Pre-registration required ($42.00).  Call 650-617-3156 for information.

Join Park Ranger Daren Anderson for a fascinating canoe adventure through the channels and sloughs of the Baylands. Meet at the sailing station where we will provide you with canoes, paddles, life jackets, and safety tips. Some basic canoe experience is required.

Winter High Tides
High tides bring rarely seen birds and animals out of the plants and reeds of the Harriett Mundy Marsh into easy view for spotting and photography. Park at the Nature Interpretive Center parking lot, 2775 Embarcadero Road.
