The Palo Alto Art Center Presents Fall 2008 Exhibitions
The Miniature Worlds of Bruce Metcalf" / September 28 - December 21, 2008
Bruce Metcalf has long been revered as a leading art jeweler, curator and critic of contemporary craft, and essayist. This is the first major exhibition and catalogue on his truly engaging and spirited work. The exhibition features seventy pieces dating from the 1970s to the present, on loan from the collections of the artist, museums, and private lenders across the country. The exhibition examines social, moral, and political issues, many of which Metcalf has also raised in his essays. In his work, issues are acted out by his vulnerable protagonists on the stage of miniature worlds. In their dual life as wearable brooches, they venture into the world, where they engage the unsuspecting viewer with their stories and distinctive visual language.
