Description:
CalWORKS, the California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids Program, replaces Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) and Greater Avenues for Independence (GAIN), and is the California name for the federal Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. CalWORKS provides cash assistance and employment services to eligible families with needy children through age 17. Medi-Cal pays for health care for some eligible and needy low-income residents of California. Food Stamp Program (650-988-6100) provides food voucher supplements for low-income and public assistance households. SSI/SSP recipients do not receive Food Stamps because an additional amount for food is included in their grants. Home Assistance Program is available for CalWORKS families who meet certain criteria and is for temporary shelter and/or payments for permanent housing. General Assistance is a cash assistance program to help individuals and couples who do not qualify for any other aid programs and who are without other means of adequate support.
