|Palo Alto, CA – One of two elderly pedestrians struck by a vehicle in a quiet Palo Alto neighborhood earlier in May has succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision.|
On Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at about 7:48 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a report of a major injury collision in the 700 block of Mayview Avenue. Officers and personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department responded to the scene immediately, and found that two elderly pedestrians had been struck by a vehicle and sustained major injuries. Paramedics transported both pedestrians to a local hospital.
The preliminary investigation conducted by our Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team revealed that the two pedestrians, a married couple in their eighties, had been crossing Mayview Avenue on foot in the middle of the block. A westbound 2015 Nissan Leaf struck both pedestrians. The driver of the vehicle, a Palo Alto woman in her forties, remained at the scene and has been cooperative with investigators. She was not injured. Police do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor. The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
On today's date, the male pedestrian passed away at the hospital. Police are not releasing his identity; that information can be obtained from the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office. The female pedestrian remains hospitalized in stable condition with major injuries.
The driver has not been cited or arrested, but police will be sending the case to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for review for any applicable criminal charges once the investigation is complete.
